Oakland Cemetery

Oakland Cemetery

Today our class went to Oakland, the oldest cemetery in Georgia. There were many important people that helped started Atlanta.  This cemetery was really six acres when it opened in 1850 and now today it is 48 acres. They have a Jewish Section, an African American Section, Confederate Section, Potters Field, and the White Section. Our mayor Maynard Jackson was the first African American to be buried in the White section. Tomorrow we are going back to take pictures of our monument that we picked and we have to take 15 photos of that monument.
This trip was pretty good because I learned some of Atlanta's history. It was very cool to see Mayor Maynard Jackson's grave because at a time he was the mayor of Atlanta. We visited Margret Mitchell's grave and when she passed she was 49 years old. I saw the grave house of Austell.  I am from Austell, GA and I live in that city now. This was a good and long field trip but were are going to be there again tomorrow so maybe I will find something else to learn about.
